New guidelines:
1. Keep Songs Simple: This is about having fun as a group. Choose songs with 3-4 chords with predictable structures.
2. Know Your Song: Memorize the chord sequence and/or lyrics. Reading from a book prevents you from connecting with the group.
3. Come Prepared: Have a few songs ready to go BEFORE arriving at the jam. Visualize how you will explain them to the group (Name, chords, timing, etc) and try to select familiar tunes.
4. Listen Hard, Play Soft!: Be aware of your volume and mindful of your neighbours. We're here to blend, not compete. Percussive elements should be kept to a minimum. When someone is taking a break (solo) the rest of the group should adjust their volume so we can hear the new focal point.
5. You're the boss (of your song): When leading, you should delegate who takes the leads (by nod, eye contact, name etc). Remember to go around the circle usually after a chorus and make eye contact with others players to see who's next. Decide when your song ends, the universal "foot in the air" can signal the last time around.
6. Respect the genre: Though "Old-Time & Bluegrass" may be difficult to pin-point as genres, don't stray too far from the general idea. Familiarity helps people connect more easily, don't be a jam buster by bringing something with 10 chords that nobody knows.
7. Have Fun! The ultimate goal is to share a good time and become better musicians.
